I wish summer meant tons of salads and while it does in some cases, margaritas and chips take a close second place. The summer time is a little bit more relaxed and sometimes our workouts fall to the wayside as we slur yessss pleasseee as we sip on our second or third drink.
For many, this means weight gain. It's obvious, right? Drink your calories, work out less and the inevitable snug pants or stretchy pants start to show themselves.
Many people also start going into the "I don't care!!! IT'S SUMMER TIME!!!" phase. And then you see a picture of yourself in a swimsuit and you're like, dammit.
There are numerous parties, weddings, get togethers, boat days and happy hours in the sunshine. Then there are the summer holidays. Who's bringing carrots to 4th of July parties?
"Hi! Can I have lemon water and an asparagus salad?" Said no one ever.
I love summer. It is my favorite. BUT it is continuous months of indulging and mindless eating and drinking. Which is fun, but sucks when you take off your dress only to show off your margarita belly.
So, how are you going to handle the arrival of summer?
Fear not. Summer is a great time to detox. (Please tell me she didn't say DETOX). Well, I sure did. Don't make it a scary thing. Detoxing is like sweating, peeing and going numero dos. The real detox happens when you eat fresh veggies, fruits and clean carbs. Detoxing regularly leads to a flat belly, energy and restful sleep.
Move your body and continue exercising regularly. It can be as simple as taking a walk, preferably in the morning, because of the intense heat wave we're experiencing in Seattle. DEAR GOD. Who knew we needed air conditioning?
Next step, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Drink tons of water. Coconut water. Lemon water. Anything with water in it. Watermelon. Watercress. Smoothies with water. Get creative.
If you're feeling like switching it up, drink some peppermint tea. As an added bonus, it has anti-nausea properties. Drink it up. Do it. Take it on the boat. Maybe add a couple drops of vodka. Clean drinks.
Enjoy summer food. Try new things. Just remember, don’t let the couch lure you into curling up with the unhealthy comfort foods like booze and carbs.
Take summer and smack it in the face. Give high fives as you drink your peppermint iced tea and crunch on some carrots, tell the chips to come back later. Or make your own using sweet potatoes.
