Over the past couple of years I've developed bad habits of staying on social media and comparing other peoples success to my own. Today, Saturday, May 23rd, I am declaring myself DONE.
A few weeks ago I was talking to a college kid at the gym about his future plans. I asked him what he was getting his degree in and answered with a pretty normal response, "I have no idea." I asked him more in depth questions about hobbies and passions and he shrugged his shoulders and said, "there are too many options and I can't figure out what I am supposed to be doing here!" I told him I understood and that it was okay, but to keep doing things that brought him joy.
I feel for him. I didn't grow up with social media and was a senior in high school when I received my first cell phone! We didn't have Instagram and Facebook came out when I was in college. Kids, teens, adults and 60 somethings are always on their phone. Searching for something, scrolling for a cool pic or finding out what restaurants are nearby. It's the weirdest thing to me. I do it too, but it isn't without being overwhelmed with options, which prevents me from making any real decision!
If I want to go to school, which one, what Master's program should I go through? I don't have a clear set plan and for that I am apparently not following suit. In a world where we are forced to make quick decisions, I am finding that people are stuck in "I don't know" land.
What to figure out what makes your heart beat faster? Want a job that feels like fun? Keep chasing the things that bring you happiness. You CAN make money + make THAT THING YOU LOVE a career! This helps me whenever I feel overwhelmed or stuck...
Sitting in silence with my eyes closed for 5 minutes. I just think and soon enough land on something that seems like a good idea.
Take a long, hot shower. For some reason shower thinking is the best! Probably because it's combined with singing.
Open an inspirational book and start reading. Drown out everything else, it doesn't matter right now. Disconnect, put your phone on airplane mode and just read.
Go on a hike. It's time to reconnect with our favorite mother, NATURE. Get out there and go crazy in the wilderness, she's there to bring us fresh oxygen!
Sit by the water. Watch the waves. Uninterrupted thinking can work miracles.
